“I don’t see her,” I tell Ham, my Ugandian guide, as I look around. “Where is she?”
Ham gives the deep, hearty laugh I’ve come to adore these past three days. “Look up!” he says, pointing excitedly.
I shield my eyes from the sun, wondering what he means. Then I see her hanging on a limb of a low, leafy acacia tree. Her eyes are closed, but there is no doubt she knows we’re watching.
The famous climbing lions of Ishasha. I grab my camera and start clicking. “Wow,” I tell Ham. “Nothing will beat this. Ever.” He lets out another round of laughter.
“Ahhh, let’s just wait and see,” he says with a wide smile.
The Rising Popularity of the Solo Female Traveler
That 2019 trip to Uganda was my first as a solo traveler. I spotted more Lilac-Breasted Rollers than other women traveling alone. But, in the years since, solo travel for women has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity. Women are embracing the freedom and empowerment that comes with exploring the world—seeing what they want, when they want, on their terms. This trend reflects a broad societal shift towards independence and self-discovery among female travelers. It’s about time.
Compelling statistics support the rise of solo female travel. According to a study by Solo Traveler World, 72% of American women have embarked on solo journeys, with many taking three or more trips annually. This data makes me want to open a spreadsheet and start planning. I have a long list of destinations on my wish list. Furthermore, research indicates women represent 64% of all travelers and nearly 80% of solo travelers, highlighting their significant presence in the travel industry.
While this trend underscores women’s desire to explore new cultures, challenge themselves, and gain unique experiences independently, solo travel offers many more benefits.
What’s in it for Me? The Benefits of Traveling Alone
Solo adventures offer endless opportunities to grow personally. My three days in Ishasha National Park certainly made me feel empowered and confident. Navigating my travel and getting to and from my accommodations alone fostered my self-reliance. It allowed me to personalize my itinerary without being responsible for anyone else’s agendas, desires, or expectations—a liberating experience, indeed.
Time alone in unfamiliar settings allows time for introspection. It encourages a deeper understanding of what makes us tick, what excites us, and what no longer serves us. Immersing ourselves in different cultures nurtures empathy and a broader understanding of the world.
Top Destinations for Solo Female Travelers
Selecting the right destination is crucial for a rewarding solo travel experience. Whether you’re taking your first solo trip or you’re a seasoned traveler, certain places cater to varying levels of comfort and adventure. Intrigued? Here are some destinations to inspire you:
For First-Timers:
Montreal, Canada
Montreal blends North American modernity and European charm, making it accessible yet culturally enriching. The Canadian city’s efficient public transportation and bilingual setting (English and French) make navigating easy. Notable sights include Old Montreal, with its cobbled streets and historic architecture; Mount Royal Park, a vast green space with panoramic city views; and the Jean-Talon Market, one of North America’s largest public markets showcasing local produce and cuisine.
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah’s deep history and Southern hospitality provide a welcoming atmosphere for solo female travelers. The city’s walkable layout and reputation for safety make exploration straightforward. Savannah’s must-visit spots include Forsyth Park, a 30-acre area with garden-lined walking paths and fountains; the Historic District, known for its well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture; and River Street, a lively waterfront area with shops and views of the Savannah River.
London, United Kingdom
London’s iconic Underground (the Tube), red double-decker buses, and black cabs ensure travelers can easily explore the city. The abundance of diverse attractions, from the historic Tower of London to the vibrant markets of Camden, means visitors will never run out of things to do. An English-speaking environment eliminates language barriers, allowing solo travelers to fully immerse themselves in London’s uber-cool vibe.
Be sure to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece designed by Sir Christopher Wren—a significant feature of London’s skyline since the 17th century. Equally compelling is Westminster Abbey, a Gothic church that has been the coronation site for British monarchs since 1066.
(And don’t forget the new ETA requirement for travel to or through the United Kingdom!)
For Seasoned Travelers:
Iceland
Iceland is called the Land of Fire and Ice for good reason. Its dramatic glacial landscapes and towering volcanoes are otherworldly. And with extremely low crime rates, Iceland is a haven for solo female travelers seeking high adventure.
Highlights include the Golden Circle, an easy-to-navigate route featuring Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. Reykjavík, the capital city, is known for its vibrant arts scene and historic sites. For an extra sensory experience unique to Iceland, head to The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa renowned for its milky blue waters and therapeutic properties.
Japan
There’s nowhere in the world quite like Japan. Combining tradition and modernity with its reputation for safety, Japan offers countless adventures for solo female travelers who want to get out of their comfort zones. Visit Kyoto, famous for its well-preserved ancient temples and traditional wooden houses. Get lost in the back streets of Tokyo, a bustling metropolis offering a mix of cutting-edge technology and historic sites. Hiroshima has a poignant history and sites promoting peace and reflection. As safe as it is beautiful, Japan is an excellent option in Asia for solo female travelers.
Portugal
Portugal’s warm climate, friendly locals, and diverse landscapes make it an appealing destination for seasoned travelers. Like Japan, the country’s reputation for safety and hospitality is well known. Travelers will want to immerse themselves in the city’s café culture and listen to soulful Fado music in Lisbon, Portugal’s coastal capital. The famous pastel de nata is a must-try delicacy, a creamy egg tart pastry with a flaky crust best enjoyed at the renowned Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém.
Sintra, a town adorned with colorful palaces and lush gardens, is a fairy-tale destination about an hour outside Lisbon. The Palácio Nacional da Pena, with its vibrant hues and eclectic architecture, is a testament to 19th-century Romanticism. Prepare to swoon.
Porto, known for its port wine production and the historic Ribeira district, offers a breathtaking riverside experience. Stroll along the Douro River and visit the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Tour the numerous Vila Nova de Gaia cellars to sample the region’s famed port wines. Wine and food lovers will fall for Portugal’s viticultural and culinary delights.
Safety First: Tips for Solo Female Travelers
Solo travel as a woman can be an empowering and enriching experience, but safety should always come first. Consider the following tips as you plan your solo adventure:
Choose Accommodations Wisely: Opt for reputable accommodations with positive safety reviews. Staying in well-known areas provides added security.
Dress Appropriately: Adapting your attire to align with local customs demonstrates respect and will deter unnecessary attention. In some cultures, modest clothing is customary and a sign of respect.
Stay Connected: Ensure you have internet access to communicate with family or friends back home. Update them often about your whereabouts for an extra layer of security.
Secure Your Valuables: Be discreet with valuables and consider using anti-theft bags tucked under clothing. Carry your backpack or purse in front of you, especially in crowded areas. Don’t wear fancy jewelry or watches (even if fake) that can make you look like a target.
Trust Your Instincts: If a situation feels off, prioritize your safety and remove yourself from the environment. When your ‘spidey-sense’ kicks in, honor it!
Navigating the Challenges of Solo Travel
While solo travel is rewarding, it comes with unique challenges. Learning a few targeted strategies can transform obstacles into fantastic experiences. For instance, to combat loneliness, consider engaging in group activities or choosing accommodations that foster social interactions. Address language barriers by learning basic local phrases. Use translation apps to enhance communication and cultural immersion. Respect cultural differences. Understanding and adapting to local customs will enrich your experience.

What is the Purpose of This Day?
Ham picks me up at my tent at the crack of dawn. This is my last game drive of the trip, and I’m already missing Africa. Ham notices my demeanor and says with his sing-song voice, “Jamie, what is the purpose of this day?” I tell him I have seen so much in such a short time—more than I ever expected. “What’s left?”
He revs the engine of the Land Rover, and we head out towards the savannah. The sun is just beginning to rise, highlighting the plains and adding tips of gold to the leaves of the acacia trees. I’m still a little sleepy. But I jolt awake when Ham slams the brakes. A cheetah is standing stock still on a dead branch, also enjoying the sunrise. We sit in silence, watching until she eventually slips away into the bush. A solo female cheetah getting ready to start the day. I can relate.
I turn to Ham, “Now I’ve truly seen it all.”
